Neutron Star Kicks from Asymmetric Collapse

چکیده

Many neutron stars are observed to be moving with spatial velocities, in excess of 500 km s. A number of mechanisms have been proposed to give neutron stars these high velocities. One of the leading classes of models proposed invokes asymmetries in the core of a massive star just prior to collapse. These asymmetries grow during the collapse, causing the resultant supernova to also be asymmetric. As the ejecta is launched, it pushes off (or “kicks”) the newly formed neutron star. This paper presents the first 3-dimensional supernova simulations of this process. The ejecta is not the only matter that kicks the newly-formed neutron star. Neutrinos also carry away momentum and the asymmetric collapse leads also to asymmetries in the neutrinos. However, the neutrino asymmetries tend to damp out the neutron star motions and even the most extreme asymmetric collapses presented here do not produce final neutron star velocities above 200km s. Theoretical support for the hydrodynamic mechanism of pulsar kicks

The collapse of a massive star’s core, followed by a neutrino-driven, asymmetric supernova explosion, can naturally lead to pulsar recoils and neutron star kicks. Here, we present a two-dimensional, radiationhydrodynamic simulation in which core collapse leads to significant acceleration of a fully formed, nascent neutron star via an induced, neutrino-driven explosion. During the explosion, an ...

Core-Collapse Supernovae and Neutron Star Kicks

Recent observations have revealed many new puzzles related to core-collapse supernovae, including the formation of magnetars and black holes and their possible GRB connections. We review our current understanding of the origin of pulsar kicks and supernova asymmetry. It is argued that neutron star kicks are intimately connected to the other fundamental parameters of young neutron stars, such as...

Neutron Star Kicks and Asymmetric Supernovae

Observational advances over the last decade have left little doubt that neutron stars received a large kick velocity (of order a few hundred to a thousand kms) at birth. The physical origin of the kicks and the related supernova asymmetry is one of the central unsolved mysteries of supernova research. We review the physics of different kick mechanisms, including hydrodynamically driven, neutrin...

Further Evidence for the Bimodal Distribution of Neutron-star Masses

We use a collection of 14 well-measured neutron-star masses to strengthen the case that a substantial fraction of these neutron stars were formed via electron-capture (e-capture) supernovae (SNe) as opposed to Fe corecollapse SNe. The e-capture SNe are characterized by lower resultant gravitational masses and smaller natal kicks, leading to lower orbital eccentricities when the e-capture SN has...

Spin-perpendicular kicks from evanescent binaries formed in the aftermath of rotational core-collapse and the nature of the observed bimodal distribution of pulsar peculiar velocities

We argue that if core collapse leads to the formation of a rapidly rotating proto-neutron star core or a fizzler surrounded by fall-back material, a lighter proto-neutron star forms around the main star moving in a super-close orbit, as an end result of a fully developed dynamical non-axisymmetric instability. Tidal mass exchange (even through a common envelope phase) propels the lighter star t...
